Celebration of Abolition of Slavery in Amsterdam

Over 100 Food and Non-Food Options Available

On July 1st, 2023, Amsterdam will commemorate the abolition of slavery in Suriname and the Caribbean at the Keti Koti Festival. This year, the festival featured over 100 food and non-food stands, offering a diverse selection of culinary delights and merchandise for attendees to enjoy.

The festival is an annual event that takes place at the Wereldmuseum Berg en Dal in Amsterdam. It serves as a platform to reflect on the transatlantic slave trade's history and its impact on the Dutch-speaking world. The festival's name, Keti Koti, means "broken chains" in the Sranan Tongo language and symbolizes the emancipation of enslaved people in Suriname in 1863.

The food and non-food stands at the Keti Koti Festival showcased a variety of cuisines and products, including traditional Surinamese dishes, African food, and Dutch delicacies. Visitors could also purchase handmade crafts, jewelry, and other souvenirs from local vendors.
